The Day The Earth Stood Still
Watched “The Day the Earth Stood Still” last night on DVD. This is a remake that just came out about a year ago. The movie had an interesting premise that really made me think. The premise was that a group of powerful alien species have determined that in order to save the earth, (and the many species living on it), that one species needs to be exterminated; Humans. Their rational is that we are destroying the earth and without us the earth will be able to heal. There was one exchange between an alien and a representative of the government I found especially intriguing. The Government official asked the alien what gave them the right to invade our planet. The alien’s response was, “Your planet. Who said this was your planet”.
The movie and my theology lined up a lot more than I would have expected. The movie showed humanity being accountable to a superior being for our actions, this planet is not ours and we need to take care of it, and that there is another side to humanity that is worth saving. In the end it appears that the Alien sacrifices his life to save humanity. There are some great themes to contemplate.
